The Spangler Effect - Nadel-durch-Ballon-Trick Staffel 01 Folge 28

00:00:01
STEVE SPANGLER: You know, certain things in this world
00:00:02
just don't mix.
00:00:03
Oil and water, dogs and cats, Sonny and Cher.
00:00:09
Giraffes and whales.
00:00:10
Sharp objects and balloons.
00:00:12
I know you haven't given a lot of thought to this, but it is
00:00:15
pretty fascinating.
00:00:16
What if you could find a sharp object and a balloon, and make
00:00:20
them live in perfect harmony?
00:00:22
I'm pretty excited.
00:00:23
I think you will be, too.
00:00:25
Failed again.
00:00:28
I'm Steve Spangler, and I'm all about making science fun.
00:00:31
For the last 20 years, I've been teaching ways to turn
00:00:34
ordinary science experiments into unforgettable learning
00:00:37
experiences.
00:00:38
I have an amazing team who will do whatever it takes to
00:00:41
affect the way people think about science.
00:00:43
And to do that, I live by one motto.
00:00:46
Make it big, do it right, give it class.
00:00:54
Remember that episode where we took the pencils, and we put
00:00:57
the pencils through the bag like this?
00:00:59
We called it the leak proof bag.
00:01:02
The secret was the fact that this plastic bag is a polymer.
00:01:06
A polymer's nothing more than this long chain of molecules,
00:01:08
and we literally put the pencil through this long chain
00:01:11
of molecules, and it sealed itself back around, keeping
00:01:14
the water from leaking out.
00:01:15
The question today is could you do the same thing with
00:01:18
another polymer, a rubber balloon?
00:01:23
See, balloons are made out of latex, and latex is nothing
00:01:25
more than a long chain of molecules.
00:01:27
If we wanted to do the same thing with the pencil through
00:01:29
the bag, you could, but there's a
00:01:31
problem with the balloon.
00:01:32
It's under so much stress, and so much pressure.
00:01:35
Watch.
00:01:38
See, most of the time we don't think about blowing up a
00:01:40
bubble, and think about the way that the molecules are
00:01:43
oriented here in the balloon.
00:01:44
We just think of blowing a balloon up, tying it off, and
00:01:48
realizing that any sharp object, like this cooking
00:01:50
skewer, and the balloon are two things that don't mix.
00:01:54
See, when we get close here, these strands of molecules are
00:01:57
stretched so thinly that just a mere presence of that sharp
00:02:01
object, and it pops.
00:02:03
Let's do it again, but this time we use a clear balloon.
00:02:06
This is a 9 inch, clear party balloon that you would find,
00:02:09
like a helium balloon.
00:02:10
But by using a clear balloon, you get to see some of the
