00:00:00
The President
Good afternoon.
00:00:02
Earlier today, the Supreme Court
upheld the constitutionality of
00:00:06
the Affordable Care Act -- the
name of the health care reform
00:00:09
we passed two years ago.
00:00:11
In doing so, they've reaffirmed
a fundamental principle that
00:00:15
here in America -- in the
wealthiest nation on Earth - no
00:00:19
illness or accident should lead
to any family's financial ruin.
00:00:25
I know there will be a lot of
discussion today about the
00:00:27
politics of all this,
about who won and who lost.
00:00:31
That's how these things tend to
be viewed here in Washington.
00:00:34
But that discussion
completely misses the point.
00:00:38
Whatever the politics, today's
decision was a victory for
00:00:41
people all over this country
whose lives will be more secure
00:00:45
because of this law and the
Supreme Court's decision to
00:00:49
And because this law has a
direct impact on so many
00:00:52
Americans, I want to take this
opportunity to talk about
00:00:54
exactly what it means for you.
00:00:57
First, if you're one of the more
than 250 million Americans who
00:01:02
already have health insurance,
you will keep your health
00:01:05
insurance -- this law will
only make it more secure and
00:01:09
more affordable.
00:01:11
Insurance companies can no
longer impose lifetime limits
00:01:14
on the amount of
care you receive.
00:01:16
They can no longer discriminate
against children with
00:01:18
preexisting conditions.
00:01:20
They can no longer drop your
coverage if you get sick.
00:01:24
They can no longer jack up
your premiums without reason.
00:01:28
They are required to provide
free preventive care like
00:01:31
check-ups and mammograms -- a
provision that's already helped
00:01:34
54 million Americans
with private insurance.
00:01:38
And by this August, nearly 13
million of you will receive a
00:01:41
rebate from your insurance
company because it spent
00:01:45
too much on things like
administrative costs and CEO
00:01:48
bonuses, and not enough
on your health care.
00:01:53
Because of the
Affordable Care Act,
00:01:55
young adults under the age of
26 are able to stay on their
00:01:58
parent's health care plans -- a
provision that's already helped
00:02:01
6 million young Americans.
00:02:04
And because of the
Affordable Care Act,
00:02:05
seniors receive a discount on
their prescription drugs -- a
00:02:09
discount that's already saved
more than 5 million seniors on
00:02:12
Medicare about $600 each.
00:02:16
All of this is happening because
of the Affordable Care Act.
00:02:20
These provisions provide
common-sense protections for
00:02:22
middle class families, and they
enjoy broad popular support.
00:02:26
And thanks to today's decision,
all of these benefits and
00:02:29
protections will continue
for Americans who already
00:02:32
have health insurance.
