00:00:05
So I’m reprising a talk that I gave in September
00:00:07
at Carnegie-Mellon University.
00:00:09
There is an academic tradition called “The Last Lecture”.
00:00:12
Hypothetically, if you knew you were going to die
00:00:14
and you had one last lecture
00:00:15
what would you say to your students?
00:00:18
Well for me there is an elephant in the room,
00:00:20
and the elephant in the room is that for me it wasn’t hypothetical.
00:00:23
I’ve been fighting pancreatic cancer
00:00:25
It is now come back after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation,
00:00:28
and the doctors tell me there is nothing more to do
00:00:30
and I have got months to live.
00:00:32
These are my most recent CT scans
00:00:34
The pancreatic cancer has spread to my liver,
00:00:36
there are approximately a dozen tumors.
00:00:39
I don’t like this.
00:00:40
I have three little kids.
00:00:44
But I can’t do anything about the fact
00:00:46
that I’m going to die.
00:00:47
I am pursuing medical treatments,
00:00:49
but I pretty much know how this movie is going to end
00:00:52
and I can’t control the cards I’m delt just how I play the hands.
00:00:56
Now, if I’m not morose enough for you
00:00:59
I am sorry to disappoint,
00:01:00
but I don’t choose to be an object of pity.
00:01:03
And in fact, although I’m going to die soon,
00:01:06
I’m actually physically very strong.
00:01:08
In fact, I’m probably physically stronger
00:01:10
than most of the people in this audience.
00:01:23
Today’s talk is not about death
00:01:25
It is about life and how to live
00:01:27
Specifically about childhood dreams
00:01:29
And about how you can try to achieve them.
00:01:31
My childhood dreams, your childhood dreams.
00:01:35
As a child I had an incredibly happy childhood.
00:01:38
I went back and raided the photo album
00:01:40
And I couldn’t find any places where I wasn’t smiling
00:01:43
Right, I just had a great childhood.
00:01:46
And I was dreaming, always dreaming.
00:01:49
It was an easy time to dream.
00:01:52
When you turn on your television set
00:01:54
and men are landing on the moon,
00:01:57
anything is possible.
00:01:58
And we should never lose that spirit.
00:02:01
So, what were my childhood dreams?
00:02:03
Being in a National Football League
00:02:04
This is one of the childhood dreams I didn’t achieve.
