Feminism in Focus - Anita Sarkeesian

00:00:02
My name is Anita Sarkeesian and produce a series of videos called Feminist Frequency
00:00:06
Feminist Frequency I started because I felt that feminism was trapped in academic areas and
00:00:11
radical political spaces. There was talk of systems of oppression and privilege
00:00:16
but in a way it was really hard to understand and I wanted to create a
00:00:20
space that was easy to get involved in feminism in an approachable.
00:00:23
I think popular culture is a language we all speak. The poet Muriel Rukeyser wrote:
00:00:28
"The universe is made of stories, not atoms." I love this quote because I feel that
00:00:33
Pop culture is one of the ways in which we can learn about ourselves and the world around us.
00:00:37
Often there is a hostility to watch TV as if it was something big, bad, horrible
00:00:41
and we deform the brain, but I do not think this is true. I am a fan of television and love stories
00:00:48
and for me to be doing is enjoying and celebrating the characters and stories and programs
00:00:53
I like while being critical of the myths and representations that the media can perpetuate.
00:00:59
It is important to critically engage with video games, comics, movies and TV series
00:01:05
they are a reflection of our society. I think there are many negative stereotypes and stories
00:01:11
in the media that help amplify and perpetuate oppressive social norms.
00:01:17
I do not think we have to disconnect the media and throw our trash TV, but we
00:01:21
to prepare for media literacy with critical tools to engage critically and creatively with the media
00:01:27
and fan communities that have been made for decades.
00:01:30
I chose a format videos online, so clearly wanted to talk about some of these and diractament
00:01:35
complex issues. I put my videos on YouTube because I wanted to talk about my generation
00:01:39
systems of privilege and oppression and feminism, and increasingly we are a visual culture.
00:01:45
Participate in popular culture through remixes and videoblogging in a very interesting
00:01:51
I feel that is where learning is happening. But unfortunately the educational institutions and
00:01:57
The academic environment is quite hostile to popular culture.
00:02:00
I have a lot of support from people who really like my videos and have even been used as
00:02:04
educational tools in the classroom and film festivals. In fact, I received messages from mothers who have
00:02:09
see them sitting with their daughters, which I find very alentador.
00:02:13
But I suffer much harassment as most feminist bloggers and women on Youtube.
00:02:18
You might wonder how many times I get comments that say, "Back in the kitchen"
00:02:23
or "Go and make me a sandwich." It's almost daily and I feel to be able to cope
00:02:29
it is also necessary to observe the inequalities that exist in our society outside the network
00:02:32
and how these are reflected in the online space.
00:02:35
Personally, with the way that I deal with these reviews is moderating them, mainly because I want to create
00:02:41
a space where people can come and engage with feminist ideas and which have not risking
00:02:45
being harassed or ridiculed.
00:02:48
You know, I feel a bit like my room, so if someone came to my house and started to say
00:02:52
"Back in the kitchen," I'm not friendly, the stitches out and I would do on my website
00:02:57
and my YouTube channel in the same way.
