The Hunger Games Movie vs. the Book

00:00:04
In my previous video I saw on the Suzanne Collins young heroine Katniss Everdeen
00:00:09
and analyzed her character in relation to sex, violence and feminism in the first book in the Hunger Games trilogy.

Have you not seen the previous video, so check it out.
00:00:18
The film version of Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross,
00:00:21
Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. The film was released in March of 2012.
00:00:25
The film broke all viewer records and found that women may have lead in major mainstream movies.
00:00:31
Note the Please, Hollywood.
00:00:33
I had two concerns before the movie.
00:00:35
The first was that violence would be glorified.
00:00:37
Cinema often make a big deal out of that spell out violence and blood.
00:00:42
I was therefore pleasantly surprised relaxation of violent images
00:00:47
and carnage hardly accompanied by cheers.
00:00:50
My other concern was that Katniss's character would be sexualised on the canvas.
00:00:53
Fortunately, the filmmakers chose not to sexualizing her.
00:00:58
Even in the scene where she bathes.
00:01:00
It is a remarkable in a Hollywood,
00:01:02
that insists on sexualizing almost all female leading roles on and off the canvas.
00:01:08
Of course, there - when you turn a book into a movie -
00:01:11
be differences due to time constraints, etc.
00:01:14
Let's look at a few differences.
00:01:16
If you have not read the book or seen the movie, then you are warned: (Parts of the plot is revealed.)
00:01:21
The book is written from Katniss point of view, as the first person narrator.
00:01:25
We therefore follow her inner dialogue, and know her thoughts, fears, desires and needs -
00:01:29
in a more intimate way than the film can describe.
00:01:32
It is not necessarily a problem. But I felt the horror of the Hunger Games book
00:01:37
and the fear that participants must have felt, did not come out of the canvas as well.
00:01:42
We are, however, some hints and signs of Katniss complex emotions
00:01:46
by Jennifer Lawrence's fantastic spectacle -
00:01:48
and because the camera lingers on her so silent communication conveyed to the viewer.
00:01:53
A worse actor could not have done it.
00:01:56
Although I really enjoyed the movie, then there glitches big enough that I will mention them.
00:02:04
Although I was impressed by the overall look of the rich city of Capitol City
00:02:08
it was amazing that the directors had decided to let the feminine and seemingly queer men to be there -
00:02:12
only as part of the decadent, superficial and sick superclass.
00:02:18
The decision to portray skewed sex as something that arises from elitist fashion, is problematic.

00:02:25
In the first book, we learn that Katniss (and probably also the other participants) is
00:02:30
exaggerated attention that every move is monitored and interpreted by viewers
00:02:35
Just like in a reality show of our time.
00:02:37
So in addition to the struggle for survival, fighting participants also through play for sympathy and gifts from sponsors.

00:02:44
Oddly enough, prioritized this aspect is not high in the film
00:02:49
At least not while they are in the arena.
00:02:50
In the book there are such clear that Katniss' seems like she has feelings for Peeta to get medicine.

00:02:57
In the film it is more ambiguous, and we are led to believe that she has genuine feelings for him.
00:03:02
Later, it is interesting in the book that Katniss it difficult even to distinguish between
00:03:07
the role she plays in relation to Peeta, and what she really feels for him.
