Begin at the Beginning - The Story Board Ep. 6

00:00:03
PATRICK ROTHFUSS: [HUMMING]
00:00:06
Oh.
00:00:06
[LAUGHING]
00:00:07
MARY ROBINETTE KOWAL: [LAUGHING]
00:00:08
PATRICK ROTHFUSS: It always catches me
00:00:10
singing right before.
00:00:12
Hello.
00:00:13
My name is Pat Rothfuss, and welcome to "Storyboard,"
00:00:16
brought you by Geek & Sundry.
00:00:19
Today we're doing something a little bit different.
00:00:22
I have my fabulous guest star, Mary Kowal.
00:00:28
And we're going to--
00:00:31
rather than have kind of a panel where we discuss a
00:00:33
topic, we're going to field Q&A from our general
00:00:40
readership.
00:00:41
And we have some questions we're going to deal with that
00:00:45
all kind of revolve around the issue of how
00:00:50
do you start writing?
00:00:52
How do you start your story?
00:00:53
How do you start your novel?
00:00:56
This is going to be a storyboard about the
00:00:59
beginnings of things.
00:01:01
But please do be aware that the focus of this one is us
00:01:06
answering your questions relating to this topic.
00:01:09
So don't be bashful if you'd like to add your particular
00:01:14
question to the queue.
00:01:16
You can throw it onto my blog or into the Geek & Sundry
00:01:20
chat, and our fabulous assistants over at Geek &
00:01:25
Sundry will make us aware of those questions and we'll do
00:01:28
our very best to fit them in.
00:01:30
So without any further rambling, I will let Mary
00:01:36
introduce herself.
00:01:37
MARY ROBINETTE KOWAL: So hello.
00:01:38
I am Mary Robinette Kowal.
00:01:41
I am a science fiction and fantasy author.
00:01:43
I write some novels--
00:01:45
historical fantasy--
00:01:47
so it's kind of like Jane Austen's magic.
00:01:49
And then I'm also a professional puppeteer, which
00:01:52
usually comes up at least once in conversation.
00:01:55
And I write short fiction and won the Hugo in
00:01:59
2011 for short story.
00:02:01
I just love that sentence.
00:02:06
PATRICK ROTHFUSS: Witness my sullen, bitter resentment.
00:02:10
MARY ROBINETTE KOWAL: That's OK.
00:02:11
You have "The New York Times" best-selling thing going on.
00:02:15
PATRICK ROTHFUSS: Well, and I really envy the skill that you
00:02:19
have writing some of the short fiction.
00:02:21
You write really good short fiction over a bunch of
00:02:24
different topical error--
