00:00:25
It is interesting,
people think of Yosemite
00:00:26
and they think of
Yosemite Valley,
00:00:27
and that's understandable,
given how spectacular it is.
00:00:31
And they don't realize that
95% of the park is Wilderness,
00:00:33
designated Wilderness,
00:00:35
and that this
huge area
00:00:37
extends back from
the rims of the Valley,
00:00:40
that is really
quite wild.
00:00:42
It amazes people
to learn that
00:00:43
the walls of the
Valley themselves
00:00:45
are designated Wilderness,
00:00:47
that the Wilderness boundary
is just 200 vertical feet
00:00:50
above the
floor of the Valley.
00:00:52
Some people think
Wilderness is exclusionary,
00:00:55
that only a tiny number
of people go there,
00:00:58
but actually everyone
who goes to the Valley
00:01:00
and looks out through
their windshield
00:01:02
is enjoying Wilderness,
00:01:04
because that's what
they're looking at.
00:01:06
Wilderness is a place removed
from roads, from buildings,
00:01:11
from permanent structures,
00:01:13
it's a place where the forces of
nature are allowed to be wild.
00:01:17
By going away
from the roads,
00:01:19
by going away from
the campgrounds,
00:01:21
you get to experience the
other 95% of Yosemite.
00:01:27
And when you go out there,
it tends to be very quiet,
00:01:31
you don't
experience the crowds
00:01:32
that you do
elsewhere in the park.
00:01:34
We hiked down from Tuolumne
Meadows, my two brothers
00:01:38
and their two sons,
00:01:40
headed to
Vogelsang, Lake Merced,
00:01:45
and now we're in
Lower Yosemite,
00:01:47
and it's pretty amazing,
00:01:49
absolutely amazing,
I mean, to walk
00:01:53
with the pace of the land,
00:01:56
we don't do that much
anymore, do we?
00:01:58
Especially in our
society and our culture,
00:02:02
there is this drive
to be successful
00:02:06
and to always be going
and always be doing,
00:02:09
I think this is an
opportunity for them
00:02:11
to just take a
deep breath,
00:02:14
it's like a breath,
00:02:15
it's like noticing your
surroundings for the first time,
00:02:19
can be a big
thing for someone.
00:02:21
I think when you're in a
day-to-day life, in a city,
00:02:24
and things become
routine, you know, and
00:02:27
sometimes I think things
are taken for granted.
00:02:30
I think it's just this soul
connection with nature,
00:02:32
to try to remember.
