00:00:24
Water is asleep
when it's in a pond.
00:00:28
Water is drowsy when it's
in the slow moving river.
00:00:33
But when water suddenly notices
that the earth has gone away,
00:00:38
And so a waterfall is
water that has awakened.
00:00:42
It has awakened to the
reality that it's alive
00:00:46
and that it's flowing
00:00:47
and that it's moving
through the air,
00:00:49
and that awakening
in the water
00:00:52
seems to wake up
something in us too.
00:00:57
Even lakes and rivers have
that sort of draw for people,
00:01:01
but it's not that
often that you have
00:01:03
a river that's free
falling through the air.
00:01:06
People have always just been
attracted to waterfalls
00:01:10
all around the world
00:01:11
and I think it's because
it's not all that often
00:01:14
that you see water just
pitching through space.
00:01:17
When people think
of waterfalls,
00:01:18
especially here in
Yosemite Valley,
00:01:20
which has a very
high concentration
00:01:22
of high waterfalls,
00:01:23
they tend to think
of facts,
00:01:24
they tend to think
of Ribbon Fall,
00:01:27
the highest single drop
of water in North America,
00:01:29
around 1,600 feet.
00:01:31
They tend to think of Yosemite
Falls, 2,425 feet,
00:01:35
fifth highest waterfalls
in the world.
00:01:38
But the numbers don't add up
to the beauty of those falls.
00:01:42
Every fall has its
own unique character,
00:01:44
every fall is water
saying to the world,
00:01:47
look, I can be
different over here
00:01:50
than I was over there,
00:01:51
they have their own personality.
00:01:55
There's a lot of different
waterfalls in this area,
00:01:57
it depends of the time
of the year you come here.
00:02:00
The ones that are going
right now would include
00:02:02
Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls,
00:02:03
on the Merced River, Bridalveil
Falls on Bridalveil Creek,
00:02:08
and some other
smaller ones,
00:02:11
but this one's named Yosemite
Falls, it's The Falls.
00:02:15
Well, I think it was given
the name Yosemite Falls
00:02:18
because it's the premier
waterfall in Yosemite Valley.
00:02:22
Bridalveil is a
spectacular waterfall,
00:02:24
so are Nevada Falls
and Vernal Falls,
00:02:26
but they are quite
a bit smaller.
00:02:28
Yosemite Falls is
just right there.
00:02:30
I mean, when you kind
of turn the corner
00:02:32
and you get your
first view of it,
