LINDA DOUGLASS:
Hi, I'm Linda Douglass,
00:00:01
I'm the communications director
for the White House Office of Health Reform.
00:00:05
And one of my jobs is to keep
track of all the disinformation
00:00:08
that's out there about
health insurance reform.
00:00:10
And there are a lot of very
deceiving headlines out there
00:00:13
right now, such as this one,
take a look at this one.
00:00:16
This one says, "Uncovered
video, Obama explains how his
00:00:20
healthcare plan will
eliminate private insurance."
00:00:24
Well, nothing could be
father from the truth.
00:00:26
You know, the people who always
try to scare people whenever you
00:00:29
try to bring them health
insurance reform are at it
00:00:32
again, and they are taking
sentences and phrases out of
00:00:36
context and cobbling them
together to leave a very false impression.
00:00:40
The truth is that the President
has been talking to the American
00:00:43
people a lot about health
insurance reform and what is at
00:00:46
stake for them, so what happens
is that because he's talking to
00:00:50
the American people so much,
there are people out there with
00:00:53
a computer and a lot of free
time and they take a phrase here
00:00:56
and there, they simply cherry
pick and put it together and
00:00:59
make it sound like he's saying
something that he didn't really say.
00:01:02
Now, for example, here is a clip
that they probably won't show you.
00:01:07
THE PRESIDENT:
Here is a guarantee that I've made.
00:01:09
If you have insurance
that you like,
00:01:13
then you will be able
to keep that insurance.
00:01:17
If you've got a
doctor that you like,
00:01:19
you will be able to
keep your doctor.
00:01:22
Nobody is trying to change
what works in the system.
00:01:27
We are trying to change what
doesn't work in the system.
00:01:31
LINDA DOUGLASS:
And here's another one.
00:01:32
THE PRESIDENT:
The public plan I think is an important
00:01:37
tool to discipline
insurance companies.
00:01:41
What we've said is,
under our proposal,
00:01:44
let's have a system the same
way that federal employees do,
00:01:50
the same way that members of
Congress do where we call it an
00:01:54
exchange, but you can
call it the marketplace,
00:01:56
where essentially you've got a
whole bunch of different plans.
00:02:00
If you like your plan,
and you like your doctor,
00:02:04
you won't have to do a
thing, you keep your plan,
00:02:06
you keep your doctor.
00:02:07
If your employer is providing
you good health insurance,
00:02:09
terrific, we're not
going to mess with it.
00:02:11
LINDA DOUGLASS:
During the August Congressional recess,
00:02:13
the members of Congress are
going to be back with a
00:02:15
health insurance reform
debate matters most,
00:02:18
and that is in neighborhoods and
communities where people are
00:02:21
struggling with high
healthcare costs,
00:02:23
where people are facing unfair
insurance regulations that
00:02:26
deny them the healthcare
that they need,
00:02:28
where people are really seeking
some kind of stability and
00:02:31
security that will let them
know that there will always be
