00:00:08
Hello, my name is Tobin,
I am a microbiologist,
00:00:11
and today I am going
to talk to you about
00:00:13
the work that EFSA is
doing in the area of
00:00:15
“Emerging Risks”.
So what are emerging risks?
00:00:18
Well, emerging risks are new or future
hazards that may occur
00:00:24
in the food chain and cause potential
health problems.
00:00:26
When I say hazards, what I
mean is chemicals or
00:00:29
micro-organisms such as
bacteria and viruses.
00:00:33
We are also interested
in re-emerging risks.
00:00:37
These are hazards, chemicals, micro-
organisms, with which we are already
00:00:43
familiar but for which new information
has come to light.
00:00:46
Now an example of new
information could
00:00:49
be a change in the exposure
to these particular hazards.
00:00:53
Now this could come about
through finding the
00:00:55
hazard in a different
part of the food chain.
00:00:58
An example of this
would be bacteria that
00:01:00
we are used to seeing
in meat and meat products
00:01:02
suddenly appearing
in fresh fruit and vegetables
00:01:05
and that we would call
a re-emerging risk.
00:01:09
Now the reason that we
are doing this work is anticipation.
00:01:14
What we want to do is to try to
anticipate new issues,
00:01:19
food safety issues,
that could occur.
00:01:22
And we do this through two
different activities.
00:01:25
First of these is monitoring information,
so typically the scientific literature,
00:01:30
but also the surveillance programs
00:01:33
that already take place
across Europe.
00:01:36
One of the types of data that we are
interested in is trade data.
00:01:40
And here we would like to know
what types of food commodities
00:01:43
are being traded in
what sorts of volumes.
00:01:47
Second activity is talking to experts. To
do this we have two particular networks.
00:01:53
The first network consists of
representatives of Food Safety Authorities
00:01:57
from across Europe and
the European Commission,
00:02:00
and the second network,
what we call ourstakeholders network,
00:02:03
consists of representatives
from the food industry,
00:02:07
from across whole food chain,
from Farm-to-Fork,
00:02:10
and also consumer associations.
00:02:13
And through these means
we want to identify
00:02:15
new Food and Safety
issues in order to be prepared.
00:02:19
And what we can do to be prepared?
00:02:24
Well, what we want to do
is to increase our understanding
00:02:28
of these new issues, and
we can do this through
00:02:31
stimulating research
or specific monitoring
00:02:34
programmes for those
issues we have identified.
00:02:38
The aim for all of
this is prevention.
00:02:40
This we can carry out through EFSA
providing the Risk Manager,
00:02:46
in this case the European Commission,
00:02:50
with meaningful information
to enable them to prioritise what
00:02:56
preventative activities that
they can put in place
00:02:59
to ensure that
those issues that
00:03:01
we have identified do not become
future food safety crises.
