Hello, my name is Claudia.
I’m a scientist working at EFSA.
00:00:12
My work involves assessing
the safety of animal feed.
00:00:16
Today, I’m here to talk about
animal feed and why feed safety is
00:00:21
important for animals,
humans, and the environment.
00:00:24
First of all, let me explain
why feed safety is important.
00:00:28
The health of animals is
an obvious reason.
00:00:31
When humans eat, we expect
our food to be safe.
00:00:35
We also expect the same for animals.
00:00:37
This applies to food-producing animals
like cows, pigs, poultry, fish and game.
00:00:44
But it also includes
our pets like dogs, cats and birds.
00:00:49
Feed safety is also important
for human health.
00:00:53
People eat many foods
derived from animals
00:00:56
including meat, eggs,
milk and dairy products.
00:01:01
This also includes workers who handle
or are exposed to feed,
00:01:05
for example on the farm
or at the factory.
00:01:09
Environmental protection is a factor too.
00:01:12
Feed additives are often used
in intensive farming
00:01:15
on a large scale and may
leak into water or soil.
00:01:20
But, what hazards might be in feed?
00:01:22
Feed includes fodder - such
as hay, straw, silage,
00:01:26
oils and grains – and manufactured feed
products that may contain additives.
00:01:32
In modern farming, many products
are used in animal
00:01:36
nutrition as additives,
for example to enhance
00:01:39
flavour or to aid digestion.
00:01:42
However, feed additives
may contain chemicals
00:01:44
– natural and artificial – or micro-organisms.
00:01:48
Sometimes traces or “residues” of
chemicals used in feed
00:01:52
can be found in food
derived from animals.
00:01:55
These residues are usually
harmless or present in such low levels
00:02:01
that they are not a safety
concern for consumers.
00:02:03
In some cases they could be harmful
if our exposure to them is too high.
00:02:08
Also, some micro-organisms
can produce harmful toxins or become
00:02:13
resistant to antimicrobials, such as
antibiotics, rendering treatment ineffective.
00:02:20
These too may pose a
serious risk to public health.
00:02:23
Also, some feed might be
contaminated during transport or
00:02:28
handling or through the presence
in the environment of hazardous substances.
00:02:32
These can be natural
like mycotoxins,
00:02:35
which are produced by wild mushrooms
00:02:37
or man-made like
dioxins, an industrial pollutant.
00:02:42
So, how do we evaluate feed safety?
00:02:46
In the European Union,
EU law requires that all feed additives
00:02:50
are evaluated for safety
and assessed for
00:02:53
risks to humans,
animals and the environment.
00:02:56
Manufacturers are required to submit
scientific information
00:03:00
that proves there is no likelihood
of any safety concerns related to their use.
00:03:05
Scientists consider all the
available information so
00:03:09
they can recommend safe levels
of use of feed additives.
00:03:12
They also provide scientific advice
based on the levels
00:03:16
of contaminants that might
be present in feed.
00:03:19
These recommendations help
to inform decision-makers
