00:00:02
So, I'm sure you understand that it's important
to be physically active and healthy. It's
00:00:09
a pretty obvious thing to say, isn't it? Like
saying you'd rather live on land than underwater.
00:00:14
Or you'd rather call your friends than fax
them.
00:00:16
But just how important is being active and
healthy? Well, let’s look. In the entire
00:00:21
world, physical inactivity is the fourth leading
risk factor for mortality behind high blood
00:00:25
pressure, tobacco use and high blood sugar.
Physical inactivity is the main cause for
00:00:30
about ¼ of all deaths caused by breast and
colon cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
00:00:36
Now, people aged 5 – 17 should accumulate
60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical
00:00:41
activity in a day. But currently, only 7%
of youth are getting the recommended amount
00:00:46
of physical activity.
00:00:48
We have a similar problem when we examine
healthy living. Less than half of children
00:00:51
and youth are getting the recommended number
of servings or fruit and vegetable daily.
00:00:55
Without change, these children will have lifespans
that are three to four years shorter than
00:00:59
today's adults, due to obesity.
00:01:02
So, it's clearly very important to be physically
active, and healthy. And to work towards getting
00:01:08
But here's the problem. Before you can make
changes and get to a position where you're
00:01:12
physically active and making healthy decisions
you've got to learn something called health
00:01:15
and physical literacy.
00:01:17
What's that you ask?...Ahem…Health literacy
is the ability to develop critical thinking
00:01:21
skills to make good decisions about your health.
Physical literacy is the ability to move with
00:01:25
competence and confidence in a wide variety
of physical activities.
00:01:30
It's like this: say you want to drive a car.
You don't just hop in the seat, and start
00:01:33
zipping around. You've got some basic skills
to learn first. Steering, stopping, parallel
00:01:38
parking. OK, maybe you still can't parallel
park.
00:01:41
The point is, you have to learn the basic
skills and strategies before you can drive.
00:01:46
Your health is the same way.
00:01:47
Let’s take physical literacy. To feel comfortable
and confident being physically active, and
00:01:52
therefore more likely to be regularly active,
you need to learn fundamental movement skills
00:01:56
like how to dodge, hop, skip, jump, kick and
overhand throw.
00:02:01
Once you’re comfortable and confident with
these skills, you can start to apply various
00:02:04
strategies in physical activities. For example,
when playing sledge hockey, you may be playing
00:02:09
defense so learning to ‘defend a space’
will be a very useful strategy. This applies
00:02:14
to hockey and basketball too! When you play
bocce or wheelchair curling, ‘avoiding obstacles’
00:02:20
will help you to score points and learning
'aim and accuracy' helps with jai alai and
00:02:24
It's the same if you want to be healthy. To
be health literate, you have to learn basic
00:02:29
critical and creative thinking skills like
planning, processing, drawing conclusions
00:02:33
and reflecting. Through these, you develop
the ability to make healthy choices like eating
00:02:38
well, avoiding smoking and making good decisions
about your emotional wellbeing.
00:02:42
Making good choices isn't like flipping on
a switch. We learn how to do it.
00:02:47
Health and physical literacy get you to a
place where you're competent and confident
00:02:51
in physical activities and making healthy
smart choices about your life. This will help
00:02:55
you get better grades, make friends and just
generally make you a happier, healthier person.
